Oyo is working on a bill when which passed and signed into law will protect women and children against violence, Governor Abiola Ajimobi has disclosed.

Ajimobi stated this at the opening of a two-day national summit by Oyo State Officials’ Wives Association (OYSOWA) in Ibadan, saying the proposed legislation was necessary to guard against unwarranted violence against women, children and other vulnerable group of persons.

Although the governor observed there had been no rampant cases of violence against women and children in the state, he stated that the bill would serve as a pro-active measure against such unwholesome practices.

“Today, there are still societies which see a woman as subservient to man, in mental and biological capacity. This is why, in spite of glaring monumental achievements of women in the globe and the phenomenal rise of the role that women play in the world, gender sensitivity or perception of women having mental equality to man, has remained unappreciated,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, over 1000 women according to the governor have so far benefited from the 0yo State Government Empowerment Programme meant to boost the economic status of Women in the State.

Ajimobi who said the programme has seen to the distribution of poverty alleviation materials to several women.

He stated that his administration would continue to advance the course of women, adding that monumental strides of the female gender around the world have had effects on socio-cultural and even religious perception of the woman.
